Last week we had the intense sibling rivalry of 17-year old Lukas vs 16-year old giant little brother Lawson as they fought it out for 5 gruelling days on the river. In the end Lawson’s 50 and 48 ½ beat up big brothers gorgeous 47. That’s a good way to lose in my book but strangely brothers can find a way to feel less good about the fish of their life if their brother catches a bigger one. It’s a testosterone thing and it never goes away. This week’s sibling rivalry is brought to you by 40-year old Henry and 42-year old Richard thus proving that boys are stupid and they never really grow up….

The Polish Hammers showed up at my place in the morning having driven all night from NJ ready to fish a grueling day out on the river. These boys are tough. You can tell from looking at the pictures.

These brothers cut their teeth on muskies here on the O and have paid their dues by waving good bye to lots of trophy muskies. Learning to turn a fish on at the side of the boat takes a long time for most and there is one truth in casting for muskies that will ring out loud and clear over time; the more alert you are and the better you manage your lure at the side of the boat, the more muskies you will catch. It is that simple.

The ‘super moon’ was everything it was supposed to be. Fish have eaten or chased baits on peak more this season than I have ever seen. Water colour and clarity on the Ottawa River is perfect for figure-eighting muskies. We caught half our fish this past week at boat side.

The morning produced a nice starter musky for Henry and any tired in his body was banished by adrenaline and he was feeling like a king. (pic 1). Check out pic 2 and see how Poles celebrate everything.

The evening session would produce more musky action than I have seen all year. The boys boated four, had hooks into another four, and saw others coming in hot too. And if you want to cap off the best day of fishing in your life, check out what a super moon looks like.

The problem with making Polish people really happy is they want to celebrate with you and share their gratitude and their exotic vodka collection and their super Jersey rye breads and real Polish pickles made in Poland. Last year I had a collection of Polish pickles ready to go for the boys and some of them were from India. Boy did I get in trouble. Polish pickles from India….. who knew. Thank gorgar I was going to Bluesfest on Sunday night to catch Moist, Sam Roberts, and Collective Soul. I needed the break!!!

The day two morning got off to a slow start, as you can imagine. With the World Cup starting at 3 pm we didn’t have a long time and conditions were way too nice for the muskies to be hunting. As luck would have it we scored one anyway and went in to shoot more Vodka and watch the beginning of Germany’s reign in modern day world soccer. A shout out to all my old Maple Leaf Almrausch team members from long ago. One of few teams in Ottawa to become a national men’s club champion!!
