Help the Ottawa River Bees

Last September I did a story for CBC about dying bees on the Ottawa River. The mass die off has began again for 2014.

Last year it was estimated that the province of Ontario lost one third of its’ bee population. Normally I don’t begin to see the bees until late August but this year they started early.

What the soy/corn/fertilizer lobbyists and the scientists are arguing about is the effect of ‘neonicotinoids’ which is a component of a new fertilizer that was introduced to my region in recent years. As a fish guy I deal with anecdotal evidence a lot as it relates to fish behaviour. Anecdotally, this doesn’t pass the smell test.

This picture is from August 5th. There will be many more.
