The end of the season has produced some of the best fishing of the year. Multiple fish days abound and there were a couple of days where all the boats from downtown Ottawa to Hawkesbury with competent muskie anglers caught fish. Networking on the river with anglers whom you trust is just common sense and so easy these days. Making sure you are tuned into the hot times and hot patterns when the fish really want to get into your boat is way easier as a team.
Sean Toll is another hardcore K Lakes MCI musky chaser I had the pleasure of fishing with this season. He and his fishing partner Pat Martin came to experience the Ottawa but also to take away some tactics that might work on their home waters. Understanding #muskie behavior and tactics is mostly transferable knowledge and what happens on one water system usually happens on other waters too. People in different places fish differently. They have different ideas on how to best fish for muskies and that’s why traveling and fishing with other hunters from other places is a great way to learn how to catch more fish. All of us came away smarter at the end of our two days.
The fish were on, the company and conversation fantastic and entertaining, and there were many notable moments, epiphanies, and things that just made you go hmmmmmmm. Pat is hot blooded and the only guy I know who calls November t-shirt weather. He fished for hours in a T every day. Everyone in the boat caught fish and we caught fish on at least four different lures including some Waterwolf baits (as usual this time of year – bassmagnetlures-waterwolflures.com). And as you can see in the picture below, Sean learned how we clean up musky pooh here on the Ottawa River. This is a good problem to have because if you don’t have this problem in your boat in November then you are not catching #muskies.
And on the subject of learning something new and applying it at home….. Sean not only caught his personal best here on the O, he went home with new knowledge that expanded what he knew was fishable water on his home lakes. It only took a week for him to net the biggest fish of the year in his boat and cap off his best #musky year ever. Congratulations Sean and thanks to both you and Pat. See you next summer.
Chimo,
JA
